Run combat without fighting your tracker. Dice Cove’s initiative tool is built for the mid-round chaos DMs actually face: damage and healing, conditions, death saves, and a turn order that never wastes a click on blank rows. No login wall, no broken encounter names.

How to use the initiative tracker

  1. Name the encounter, then add PCs, allies, and enemies (or type an SRD monster name for autocomplete).
  2. Enter initiative — or click the die on a row / use Roll initiative for everyone.
  3. Hit Sort & start, then Next turn (or press N) as each creature acts.
  4. Select a combatant to apply damage, heal, set temp HP, toggle conditions, and track death saves.
  5. Save as many encounters as you need locally — or Share / Export when you want a backup.

Why this beats a basic initiative grid

  • Current / max HP with one-tap damage and healing (temp HP absorbs first)
  • Condition chips, concentration, and PC death saves
  • Turn rail that shows who’s up next — empty rows skipped by default
  • PC / ally / enemy color coding and hideable combatants
  • SRD monster autocomplete with pack add (+3)
  • Legendary / lair reminders, per-creature notes
  • Keyboard shortcuts for next, previous, sort, and mass initiative rolls
  • Offline autosave, multi-encounter library, JSON export/import, shareable links

Frequently asked questions

How does this initiative tracker work?

Add PCs and monsters, roll or enter initiative, then Sort & start. Use Next turn (or press N / Space) to advance. Empty and hidden rows are skipped so combat stays fast.

Can I track hit points during combat?

Yes. Each combatant has current and max HP, plus temp HP. Select a creature and apply damage or healing with quick buttons — temp HP absorbs damage first.

Does it include D&D monsters?

Start typing a name for SRD / common 5e monsters (goblin, owlbear, young red dragon, and many more). Selecting a match fills HP, AC, and initiative modifier. Use +3 to drop a pack of the same monster.

Do I need an account to save encounters?

No. Encounters autosave in your browser. You can keep multiple local encounters, export/import JSON, or copy a share link for the current fight.

What keyboard shortcuts are available?

N or Space advances the turn, P goes previous, S sorts and starts the round, R rolls initiative for all named combatants.

How are initiative ties resolved?

Higher initiative total wins. On a tie, higher initiative modifier (usually DEX) wins, then name alphabetically — so order stays predictable when several creatures roll the same number.
